The excimer laser was first developed in 1972. It does not cut tissue like a scalpel; rather it ablates or vaporizes a small amount of tissue from the corneal surface. The laser is able to precisely re-shape or sculpt the corneal surface, which makes your eye a more ideal shape for focusing light and corrects for nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.

To treat nearsightedness, the steep cornea is made flatter by reshaping the center of the cornea.  This moves the point of focus from in front of the retina to directly on the retina.

To treat farsightedness, the flat cornea is made steeper by reshaping the peripheral optical zone of the cornea.   This moves the point of focus from behind the retina to directly on the retina.

To treat astigmatism, the cornea is made more spherical, like a basketball instead of a football.  This eliminated multiple focus points within the eye and creates one point of focus on the retina.  Astigmatism is treated at the same time as nearsightedness or farsightedness.

Dr. Birchansky has successfully performed thousands of vision correction procedures from very low to moderately high degrees of nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.  Dr. Birchansky is highly trained in a number of laser vision procedures.  He performs Epi-LASIK, E-LASIK and LASIK.  Based on your individual needs, Dr. Birchansky will recommend the procedure that is best for your eyes.
